MAASAILAND DEVELOPMENT FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN

«You can not go through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.»

Maasailand Development for Women and Children wants to improve the living conditions of the Maasai living in Tinga Tinga - a small village by the foothill of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. We want to do so with love and great respect for the amazing and unique Maasai culture. We believe that a single action can make a difference in the community, and that collective action can greatly impact the future for the Maasai. Our compassionate team works tirelessly each day to give hope and empower the Maasai community in Tinga Tinga!

MAASAILAND MILELE TEMBO LODGE
Travel with impact

IMG_6197_edited_edited_edited.png

MDWC have now completed a 5 bungalow lodge to accommodate visitors. The bungalows are built in a traditional Maasai way, but upgraded with modern amenities like beds, toilets and showers. In our on site restaurant you can enjoy your food together with the unforgettable view of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and Mount Longido. Wild animals like giraffes, zebras and elephants are often seen around the lodge area.

We offer several activities at our lodge that will give you all the information you want about the unique Maasai culture. Activities we offer can include a nature walk with the Maasai, a spear throwing competition, a Maasai bbq and dancing and storytelling by the bonfire at night. Enjoy the beautiful sunset and join the Maasai in a sundown dance.

Visitors will also be able to visit a traditional Maasai Boma, visit the Maasai market on Fridays, take a walk in the center, visit the church on Sundays and visit our social projects.

We also offer to arrange safaris, mountain climbs, hikes and other activities- so please don’t hesitate to ask
at our lodge. Arranging these kinds of activities and visits will provide jobs to the local Maasai living In TingaTinga, and the income from the lodge will go to cover our running costs at the school and the future health clinic.

It is all about giving back to the community❤️

PRE- AND PRIMARY SCHOOL

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world"

Currently we have 489 pupils in our school from baby class up to sixth grade. Over the next yearswe will expand to include seventh graders to provide a complete primary school education for the local Maasai people. Our beloved pupils get with two warm meals a day to ensure the best possible learning environment.

The school year in Tanzania starts in January, so every year new students will be accepted until we fill our classes from baby class up to seventh grade.

In Tanzania the education in all government pre- and primary schools are in Swahili. Starting secondary school all classes are taught in English, resulting in a lot of children not being able, or at least struggling, to continue their education. As the Maasai people are semi-nomadic it is also very important that the school is located in close proximity to their homes.

For the children that do not get the chance to continue to secondary school, or get a higher education, we hope that they will benefit from knowing English. Most of the Maasai people are poor and english medium schools are expensive. We have chosen to give the Maasai children in TingaTinga free education. All children should get the same chance and hope for a better future. We have a dedicated and hard working team who strive to give the children a good foundation in a safe and loving environment.

We are happy to arrange for guests to visit the school, meet our wonderfully dedicated teachers and the children.

TRADITION AND CREATIVITY

When looking at pictures of the Maasai people, you probably spotted the beautiful bead jewelry they wear.  The traditional handcrafts is admired by tourists and designers around the world.
The MDWC Women Group is making the most beautiful traditional jewelry which is a vital part of the Maasai culture. The handcrafts is offered at the local marked and to our visitors in Tinga Tinga.

We also have a women group who is learning to Sow. We have bought 12 sowing machines and the first group have startet a 6 months sowing course. The products they make will sell to their local community and to clients who visit our project.

With our organization’s mission always in mind, we strive to find new strategies for dealing with this challenge. Food Donation Drop-Off is something that we take very seriously, and our team is working each and every day to make a positive impact. Contact us to learn more about our commitment to this cause.

OUR NEXT STEP - A HEALTH CLINIC

MDWC is now planning a mother and child health clinic. Tinga Tinga is situated in a rural area, and the access to basic professional health care is scarce. Long travels and high cost is preventing the Maasai in Tinga Tinga to get much needed care from the large cities health centers. A local clinic in Tinga Tinga will ensure that primary health care like vaccines, birth assistance, birth control information, treatment of non-complex medical conditions, health status examination & blood sampling.

At Maasailand Development for Women and Children, we are dedicated to stepping up our efforts in addressing this issue. Health Clinic is by no means an easy feat, but through cooperation and community empowerment we believe we can facilitate progress in this area. We are always striving to make a difference, and invite you to learn more and lend your support.
